Circumstances:

On August 14, 2025, a privately operated Just JA30 SuperSTOL was involved in an accident during take-off from a beach near Marina Plains, Queensland. The aircraft was departing for Cooktown Airport when, during the initial climb, it encountered a sudden wind gust.

The gust destabilised the aircraft, leading the pilot to lose control. The SuperSTOL subsequently descended and collided with a river, resulting in substantial damage to the airframe.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has confirmed the occurrence and is investigating. No fatalities were reported, though full details of the pilot’s condition and possible minor injuries were not specified in preliminary reporting.

The incident highlights the hazards associated with operating in remote and unimproved strips such as beaches, where variable winds and terrain can present significant risks during critical phases of flight.
