Circumstances:

Sunstate Airlines flight QF2017, a Bombardier DHC-8-402Q Dash 8, experienced a hard landing incident at Broken Hill Airport. The aircraft, operating a scheduled passenger flight from Sydney, encountered difficulties during its initial landing attempt on runway 06. While the specific factors that led to the hard landing are not yet known, several possibilities could include challenging weather conditions at the time of landing, potential issues with the aircraft’s landing gear or other systems, or pilot decision-making during the approach.

The flight crew, recognizing the unstable landing, initiated a go-around procedure. A go-around is a standard safety maneuver in aviation where the pilots abort the landing attempt and climb back to a safe altitude. This allows them to reassess the situation, address any potential issues, and prepare for another landing attempt. After circling for approximately 75 minutes, the aircraft successfully landed without further incident.

The incident highlights the importance of go-around procedures in ensuring flight safety. By recognizing an unstable approach or landing and executing a go-around, pilots can avoid potential accidents and ensure the safety of passengers and crew.
