**During firefighting operations on September 20, 2023, a Bell Helicopter 204B crashed into a dam at Tarome, on the eastern side of the Main Ranges. The pilot miraculously escaped unharmed from the incident. The helicopter was engaged in a critical operation, attempting to control a wildfire in the area when the crash occurred. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) is actively investigating this incident under case number AO-2023-044, with a preliminary report already released in December 2023, aiming to determine the specific causes and potential safety measures to prevent future occurrences.**
