Circumstances:
On July 30, 2025, a privately operated glider crashed under unknown circumstances south of Bowenville in Queensland’s Darling Downs region. The aircraft had departed from McCaffrey Field (YMCF), home of the Darling Downs Soaring Club, and was being operated by a 56-year-old Brisbane man who was the sole occupant.
At approximately 18:30 local time, emergency services responded to reports of a downed aircraft in a field near Wainui Soldiers Road. The crash site was described as remote and difficult to access due to muddy terrain.
Initial radar data suggested the glider’s flight ended abruptly, with a high sink rate and rapid turn shortly before impact. The aircraft is believed to have been on its first recorded flight in Australia, with previous activity logged only from the Schleicher factory in Germany.
The pilot was declared deceased at the scene. Queensland Police established a crime scene and launched an investigation with support from the Forensic Crash Unit. Investigators are considering factors such as weather, aircraft condition, and possible control anomalies. The ATSB has been notified.
Authorities have confirmed the presence of onboard batteries which required stabilisation before the crash site could be safely processed. A full report for the coroner is expected.
