Circumstances:

On 19th October 2023, a Jabiru J160 crashed into an open field in Palgrave, Southern Downs, Queensland. The impact was so severe that it not only claimed the life of the sole pilot but also completely destroyed the aircraft in a subsequent fire. The aircraft, identified as a “kit-built” model, came down around 12:15 pm, igniting a small grass fire in its wake. Local authorities, including the police and fire departments, were quick to respond. Although an Australian Transport Safety Bureau spokesperson acknowledged the incident, they mentioned that an official investigation would not be conducted by them since the aircraft was a kit-built model. Instead, the investigation will be carried out in conjunction with officials from Recreational Aviation Australia.
