Circumstances:

A Morgan Aeroworks Cougar Mk1 crashed in a paddock near Tinamba West, East Gippsland, Victoria, tragically killing all three occupants. The aircraft was destroyed by a post-crash fire.

Witnesses reported seeing the aircraft circling the area before the crash, with some noting that it sounded unusual. The aircraft had recently been sold by the builder to new owners based in Whyalla, South Australia. It is believed that the aircraft was under syndicate ownership, with individuals of varying ages and experience levels.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has launched an investigation into the accident, deploying a team of investigators to the site. They will examine the wreckage, interview witnesses, and gather relevant information such as flight tracking data, pilot and aircraft maintenance records, and weather information.

The ATSB’s investigation will focus on determining the cause of the crash and any contributing factors. This will include examining the aircraft’s maintenance history, the pilot’s experience and qualifications, and the weather conditions at the time of the accident.

This tragic accident highlights the importance of thorough pre-flight planning, aircraft maintenance, and pilot proficiency, especially for amateur-built aircraft and those under syndicate ownership where varying levels of experience may exist.
