Circumstances:

On July 21, 2025, a DJI remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS) was conducting aerial surveying operations approximately 21.7 kilometres southwest of Archerfield Aerodrome, Queensland, when it was involved in a mid-air collision with a wedgetail eagle.
Following the birdstrike, the RPAS operator lost control of the drone. The aircraft subsequently impacted terrain and was substantially damaged.

There were no injuries to persons on the ground, and no third-party property was affected. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) investigated the occurrence and confirmed the nature of the wildlife strike and the resulting loss of control.

This incident highlights the ongoing hazards RPAS operators face from airborne wildlife during low-altitude survey missions, particularly in rural or bushland areas.
