Circumstances:

On August 3, 2025, search and rescue efforts were launched after a privately operated BRM Aero Bristell light aircraft went missing over Bass Strait. The aircraft departed George Town Airport, Tasmania around 12:45 PM local time on Saturday, August 2, bound for Hillston, NSW via Leongatha, VIC. It failed to arrive at its intended destination.
The aircraft carried two occupants: an experienced male pilot in his early 70s and a female passenger in her 60s, both Tasmanian residents. A dog was also on board. The aircraft had been recently purchased, and the pilot was familiar with its operation.

At approximately 5:00 PM, concern was raised when the aircraft failed to land as scheduled. Search operations coordinated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) commenced immediately, covering areas from George Town across the Bass Strait to southern Victoria, including the Morwell and Leongatha regions.

Search assets included aircraft, helicopters, and marine vessels. TT-Line’s Spirit of Tasmania II ferry was temporarily diverted to assist with the search near the aircraft’s last known position. Tasmania Police deployed watercraft from Low Head and are supporting ongoing efforts.

No wreckage or confirmed sightings have been reported. Authorities have requested assistance from the public and mariners transiting northern Tasmania or southern Victoria to report any signs of the aircraft.
