Circumstances:

Batik Air Malaysia flight OD178 departed Melbourne-Tullamarine Airport from runway 34 on a scheduled service to Denpasar. Shortly after takeoff, the flight crew reported an engine failure and discontinued the climb.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 entered a holding pattern north of the airport while the crew completed checklists and coordinated with air traffic control. The aircraft remained airborne for approximately 40 minutes.

Following the holding period, the crew conducted a safe return and landing on runway 16 at Melbourne. No injuries were reported among those on board. Details regarding the extent of aircraft damage have not been publicly released.
