Incident Overview
Police have charged a man following a fatal traffic crash on the M1 at Gaven that claimed the life of an infant in September. The collision occurred in the early hours of 21 September when a parked vehicle on the northbound lanes was struck by another vehicle near the Smith Street on-ramp. An infant who was inside the parked vehicle was transported to hospital but died a short time later. After a protracted investigation, police have laid multiple charges against the driver of the striking vehicle.

    • Male infant — passenger in the Jeep; died shortly after being transported to hospital.
  • Critical/Serious Injuries:
    • 24-year-old Ormeau Hills woman — Jeep driver; transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.
  • Other Injuries:
    • 51-year-old Loganlea man — Toyota driver; sustained minor injuries.

  • Emergency services attended the M1 shortly after reports of the collision.
  • The infant and Jeep driver were transported to Gold Coast University Hospital.
  • The crash scene was secured for forensic examination and traffic management.

Police Investigation
Following a comprehensive and protracted investigation, police charged the driver of the Toyota Hilux.

  • One count of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death.
  • One count of driving while a relevant drug is present in blood or saliva.
  • One count of driving without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration, causing death or grievous bodily harm.
  • The accused is due to reappear before Southport Magistrates Court on 12 December.
