Two toddler sisters are fighting for life following a serious multi-vehicle crash at a busy intersection in Banya on the Sunshine Coast. The collision occurred around midday and involved four vehicles, leaving seven people injured. The toddlers were travelling in a car driven by their mother when it was struck by a truck and pushed into a nearby building site. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances.

  • Blue passenger car — carrying the two toddler sisters and their mother
  • Truck — struck the blue car, pushing it into a building site
  • Two additional passenger vehicles — involved in the collision

Injuries/Fatalities

  • Critical/Serious Injuries:
    • Two toddler-aged girls — sustained life-threatening injuries; both transported to Queensland Children’s Hospital.
  • Other Injuries:
    • Woman in her 30s (children’s mother) — head and chest injuries; transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.
    • Driver in his 60s — suffered a medical episode; transported to hospital in a stable condition.
    • Three other people — transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in stable conditions.

Emergency Response

  • Queensland Ambulance Service, police and rescue crews attended the scene.
  • Paramedics provided critical care to the toddlers at the scene.
  • One child was taken by road to Sunshine Coast University Hospital before being airlifted to Queensland Children’s Hospital.
  • The second child was airlifted directly to Queensland Children’s Hospital.

Police Investigation
The Forensic Crash Unit is leading the investigation into the cause of the collision.

  • Police are considering whether a reported medical episode suffered by one driver contributed to the crash.
