A truck driver is in critical condition following a major crash on Melbourne’s Monash Freeway that shut down all outbound lanes and caused widespread traffic chaos on Wednesday afternoon, July 16, 2025. The incident occurred near Huntingdale Road around 2:20 pm, when the truck reportedly blew a tyre, struck a concrete median, and brought down a power pole. Three additional vehicles were also impacted in the crash. The crash resulted in a significant diesel spill, debris scattered across lanes, and a lengthy freeway closure.

Emergency Response
Fire Rescue Victoria arrived within six minutes of the Triple-0 call. Crews found the truck smoking and leaking fuel and worked to contain a significant diesel spill. A light pole was brought down, and debris impacted inbound lanes as well. Police, firefighters, and transport authorities coordinated the freeway closure and clean-up, with drivers being diverted off at Warrigal Road.

Investigation
Victoria Police have launched an investigation into the crash. Focus areas include:

  • The cause of the tyre blowout and loss of vehicle control
  • Damage caused to surrounding infrastructure, including the power pole
  • Whether speed, load handling, or driver condition were contributing factors

Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage from the area around 2:00–2:30 pm to contact police.

Community Impact
The crash caused significant disruption across Melbourne’s southeast, with all outbound lanes of the Monash Freeway between Chadstone and Mount Waverley closed for several hours. Traffic delays stretched back to Toorak Road. Motorists were redirected to Dandenong Road and other arterials, creating widespread congestion during the evening peak.

Victoria Police are seeking any witnesses or dashcam footage from motorists in the area of the Monash Freeway near Huntingdale Road around the time of the crash:
