Incident Overview
Three young people have died following a head-on collision involving a sedan and a ute on the Mackay Ring Road in Glenella, north Queensland. The incident occurred at approximately 10:30pm on Saturday, July 19, 2025. Police allege the Mazda sedan attempted to overtake a semi-trailer before colliding with an oncoming ute. All three occupants of the Mazda — two men and one woman, all aged 19 — were declared dead at the scene.

Emergency Response
Multiple emergency services responded to the crash site around 10:30pm. The three deceased occupants were pronounced dead on arrival. The ute driver was treated for minor injuries. Authorities managed traffic and began scene investigations late into the night.

Investigation
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating:

  • The Mazda sedan’s attempt to overtake the semi-trailer prior to the collision
  • Speed and decision-making in overtaking manoeuvres at night
  • Visibility, road conditions, and traffic volume at the time of the crash
  • Statements from other road users and vehicle occupants

Police believe overtaking on the busy stretch of road in dark conditions contributed significantly to the fatal crash.

Community Impact
This tragic collision has added to Queensland’s escalating youth road toll. The Mackay community is mourning the loss of three young lives in what is being described as a preventable tragedy. Calls for safer overtaking zones and greater night-time driving awareness have re-emerged in the wake of this incident.
