During a subsequent search, police allegedly found cannabis, unprescribed medication, stolen items, and ammunition in the boy’s possession. A male and female passenger fled the scene on foot. Investigations into the crash and related property crimes remain ongoing.

Crash Description
Police allege that the red Ford Focus failed to stop at a stop sign on Anthony Street, colliding with a Holden Barina. The impact caused the Ford to veer off course and strike a 76-year-old man riding a mobility scooter. Emergency services were called to the scene, but the elderly man was declared deceased at the scene.

The occupant of the Holden Barina sustained non-life-threatening injuries and received medical attention. Members of the public restrained the 17-year-old driver of the Ford Focus until police arrived. During a search of the boy and his backpack, officers allegedly discovered:

  • Cannabis and unprescribed medication.
  • Two cards believed to be stolen.

A male and female passenger from the Ford Focus fled the scene on foot and are yet to be located. The vehicle was not reported as stolen.

Charges and Legal Proceedings
The 17-year-old boy from Waterford West has been charged with seven offences relating to the crash, including:

  • One count of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death whilst adversely affected by intoxicating substances and leaving the scene without obtaining help.
  • Two counts of unlicensed driving.
  • Three counts of possessing dangerous drugs.
  • One count of possessing Schedule 4 or Schedule 8 medicines without a prescription.

He has also been charged with nine unrelated property crime offences , including:

  • Four counts of possessing tainted property.
  • One count each of entering a dwelling and committing an offence, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, receiving tainted property, possession of unauthorized and prohibited explosives (ammunition), and possessing drug paraphernalia.

Police allege these additional charges relate to offences committed on February 20, 2025 , including the theft of number plates in Crestmead and a burglary in Greenbank.

The teenager has been refused bail and is expected to appear before the Beenleigh Children’s Court on Monday, February 24, 2025 , where police will oppose bail.

A 16-year-old girl who was a passenger in the Ford Focus is assisting police with their investigation and has not been charged.

Investigation
The Forensic Crash Unit and local police are conducting an ongoing investigation into the crash. Authorities are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward. Investigators are particularly focused on determining whether intoxicating substances impaired the teenage driver and whether other factors, such as speed or distraction, contributed to the crash.

Additionally, police are investigating further property crimes in the Logan area linked to the accused.
