Payne was with friends at the beach when he decided to take his motorbike for a ride. Tragically, he hit a rock and was thrown from his bike, suffering bleeding on the brain, a broken back and neck, and bruising on his spinal cord. His friends found him unconscious and called for help.

Payne was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital in critical condition and placed in an induced coma for two days. He has undergone spinal fusion surgery and will require a halo brace for at least 10 weeks. He currently has limited movement below his knees and is experiencing hyper-sensitivity in his legs. The full extent of his injuries and his potential for recovery are still unknown.
