Incident Overview

On April 30, 2023, a 13-year-old boy driving a stolen car caused a devastating crash on Saltwater Creek Road, Maryborough, Queensland. The crash resulted in three fatalities and left another person critically injured. The victims were:

  • Michale Chandler (29) – A youth pastor
  • Kelsie Davies (17)
  • Sheree Robertson (52) – A nurse driving home from her shift

Another passenger, Kaylah Behrens (23), was critically injured and continues to suffer from lasting medical issues.

Sentencing Details

The teenage boy was sentenced to:

  • Six years in youth detention, with release after serving 60% of the sentence.
  • Convictions recorded for:
    • Dangerous driving causing three deaths and grievous bodily harm
    • Unlawful use of a motor vehicle

The court considered the offender’s age, troubled upbringing, and prospects for rehabilitation but emphasized the need to reflect the severity of the consequences.

Key Factors in the Crash

The court heard that the boy:

  • Stole a 2003 Mercedes-Benz and drove recklessly.
  • Reached speeds of up to 200kph on public roads.
  • Engaged in “manic driving,” including:
    • Swerving between lanes.
    • Crossing double white lines.

Victim Impact

The families of the victims expressed their grief and frustration at the sentencing:

  • Liesa Latimer, sister of Sheree Robertson, said: “We were just hoping for more.”
  • Victims’ advocate George Atkinson added: “The system favors offenders, not victims.”

Floral tributes and messages have been left at the crash site as the community mourns the loss of the three victims.

Court’s Justification

Judge Gary Long SC balanced the need for community safety with the boy’s potential for reform, noting:

  • The offender’s exposure to domestic violence and a traumatic brain injury.
  • The importance of providing juvenile offenders with opportunities for rehabilitation.

The judge emphasized that while the offender’s actions were egregious, sentencing must reflect legal principles, not just emotions.
