Injuries and Fatalities
- Deceased: Jimmy Webster, 14 (passenger in the horse truck). Despite receiving first aid from a bystander and paramedic efforts, he died at the scene.
- Injured: – 38-year-old male driver of the horse truck, transported to hospital in stable condition. – One horse euthanised due to severe injuries; three others received treatment.
- Uninjured but tested: 66-year-old male tractor driver and 33-year-old male semi-trailer driver (both underwent mandatory hospital testing).
Crash Description
Police confirmed that the horse truck collided with both a semi-trailer and a tractor along the Kamilaroi Highway. Jimmy, a passenger in the horse truck, sustained fatal injuries. A passer-by attempted first aid before paramedics arrived, but he could not be revived.
The collision resulted in one horse being euthanised, while three others required urgent veterinary care. The Kamilaroi Highway was closed in both directions for 17 hours while investigations and recovery operations were conducted.
Community Impact
Jimmy Webster had only recently celebrated his 14th birthday and was well-known in Tamworth’s campdrafting and rugby union communities. Tributes described him as a “passionate young horseman, cheeky, witty and loyal,” whose death has left a deep void in his club and wider community.
His rugby club, the Pirates Rugby Union U14s, set up a GoFundMe to support the Webster family, describing the loss as “unimaginable.” Brunswick Football Club, where he also played, will honour Jimmy with black armbands and a minute’s silence at their next match.
Investigation
The Peel Traffic and Highway Patrol and Forensic Crash Unit are investigating the crash. Police are also seeking to identify the passer-by who provided first aid, as he may assist with their inquiries.
