Incident Overview
Queensland Police have charged a 36-year-old Bundaberg West man after a serious two-vehicle road crash at Bundaberg on Friday, 31 July 2026. The crash involved a red Mazda 3 sedan and a white Toyota Hilux. One driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries, while the other sustained life-threatening injuries and remains in a critical condition.

    • 64-year-old Avondale man, the driver of the Toyota Hilux; airlifted to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.
  • Minor injuries:
    • 36-year-old Bundaberg West man, the alleged driver of the Mazda; transported to Bundaberg Hospital.

Emergency Response

  • The alleged Mazda driver fled the scene on foot and was located and arrested a short time later.
  • He was transported to Bundaberg Hospital with minor injuries.
  • The Toyota driver was airlifted to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for treatment.

Police Investigation
Investigators from the Queensland Police Service Forensic Crash Unit charged the alleged Mazda driver following the crash. The charges are allegations, and the QPS update does not state a final finding about the cause of the collision or legal responsibility.

  • The 36-year-old Bundaberg West man faces one count each of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death or grievous bodily harm whilst adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, failing to supply the necessaries, evasion, driving without a driver licence, driving an uninsured vehicle and driving an unregistered vehicle.
  • He is expected to appear in Bundaberg Magistrates Court on 1 August 2026.
