Incident Overview

On Tuesday night, October 22, 2024, a stolen Audi S5 crashed into a B-double truck on the Logan Motorway near Kingston Road in Loganlea, causing a major fire and the closure of the motorway.

Details of the Crash

Around 8:15 PM, the stolen Audi rear-ended the truck, which was carrying a tonne of lithium batteries and about 200kg of pesticide. The impact caused the truck to ignite and become fully engulfed in flames, creating a hazardous situation due to the potentially dangerous cargo.

Suspects Flee the Scene

A man and a woman in their 30s were seen running from the wrecked Audi after the crash. They fled the scene in an unknown direction and are currently being sought by police.

Stolen Vehicles and Investigation

Police have revealed that the Audi was stolen earlier in the evening in Durack. The offenders were driving a white Mazda 3, also stolen, when they crashed into the Audi and subsequently stole it. The Mazda had been stolen earlier in Eastern Heights, Ipswich. Police are investigating the series of vehicle thefts and the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Emergency Response and Road Closure

A major emergency response was initiated due to the hazardous materials involved in the truck fire. An emergency exclusion zone was declared, encompassing the crash site and nearby ramps. The Logan Motorway was closed in both directions, causing significant traffic disruptions. The westbound lanes were reopened overnight, but only one eastbound lane remained open on Wednesday morning.

Injuries

The truck driver, a man in his 50s, sustained injuries and was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a stable condition. The two suspects who fled the scene are not believed to have been injured.
