Incident Overview

Two men died after a Holden Barina and a Mitsubishi Triton collided on the East Derwent Highway at Old Beach on Tuesday, 23 June 2026. Tasmania Police said the investigation into the fatal collision was continuing.

Location and Time

Police said the collision occurred at about 11.55am on the East Derwent Highway, just north of Cassidys Road at Old Beach. The available reports do not identify the precise point of impact beyond that location.

People and Vehicles Involved

Tasmania Police identified the vehicles as a silver Holden Barina and a grey Mitsubishi Triton. The Barina’s driver was a 20-year-old man from Greater Hobart and his passenger was a 22-year-old man, also from Greater Hobart. They were the only occupants of that car.

Injuries and Fatalities

Both men in the Barina died at the scene, police said. The driver of the Triton did not sustain serious physical injuries and was taken to Royal Hobart Hospital as a precaution. The public update did not describe any later medical outcome.

Emergency Response

Police said initial inquiries indicated that the Barina crossed to the opposite side of the road at an angle before the collision. This was an initial investigative account, not a final conclusion about why it happened or who was legally responsible.
