Police had sighted a Holden Insignia sedan acting suspiciously on Mamre Road and began following it. The Holden accelerated away from police and turned onto the Great Western Highway, where police briefly lost sight of it. Officers activated their lights and sirens but were not in an official pursuit. Shortly after, the Holden collided with a silver Toyota Corolla hatchback driven by the 49-year-old man. The driver of the Holden then fled the scene on foot.
Fatality and Arrest
Tragically, the 49-year-old driver of the Toyota Corolla died at the scene. The driver of the Holden, a 43-year-old man, was later apprehended by police at a nearby residence. He was allegedly attempting to steal clothes from a clothesline.
Investigation and Road Closure
The Great Western Highway was closed in both directions at St Marys between Glossop Street and Sydney Street. A crime scene was established, and an investigation is underway. The 43-year-old driver was taken to Nepean Hospital for mandatory testing and is known to police. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the crash, including the speed of the Holden and the actions of the police officers involved.
