Former Geelong football star Ray Card has been charged with culpable driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death after a tragic accident on the Geelong Ring Road that resulted in the death of his wife, Mandy Card. The crash occurred late Saturday night, November 16, 2024, and has sent shockwaves through the Geelong football community.

The crash happened around 11:20 pm on the Geelong Ring Road in Lara, Victoria.
Vehicles Involved
The crash involved two vehicles: a Ford Ranger driven by Ray Card and a BMW driven by a 23-year-old man from Lara.
Crash Description
Ray Card’s Ford Ranger collided with a BMW. The circumstances that led to the collision are still under investigation.
Injuries/Fatalities
Tragically, Mandy Card, Ray Card’s 57-year-old wife, was a passenger in the Ford Ranger and died at the scene. Ray Card himself sustained serious injuries but was in a stable condition. The driver of the BMW and his passenger, a 19-year-old woman from Lovely Banks, were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Emergency services were called to the scene to attend to the crash and transport the injured to the hospital.
Investigation and Charges
Following the crash, Major Crash investigators attended the scene and examined the circumstances. On Tuesday, November 19th, police formally charged Ray Card with culpable driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death. He is due to appear at Geelong Magistrates’ Court on November 26th.
Community Impact
This tragic incident has deeply affected the Geelong football community and the wider public. Ray Card is a well-known figure in Geelong, having won the best-and-fairest award for the Geelong Cats in 1983 and played 110 games for the club. He is also the current president of the Geelong Past Players and Officials Club. Tributes have flowed for Mandy Card, and the Geelong Past Players and Officials Club have expressed their condolences to the Card family.

The contributing factors to the crash are still under investigation. However, the charges laid against Ray Card suggest that police believe his driving played a significant role in the collision.
