Incident Overview

Four people have tragically lost their lives in a head-on collision near the Yirrkala Community in East Arnhem, Northern Territory. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, January 8, 2025, and involved a stolen Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Prado.

Location and Time

The crash happened just after 7:15 am on Gunyipinya Road near the Yirrkala Community in East Arnhem, Northern Territory.

Vehicles Involved

Two vehicles were involved in the collision: a grey Toyota Corolla, which had been reported stolen from a home in Nhulunbuy approximately half an hour before the crash, and a Toyota Prado.

Crash Description

The stolen Toyota Corolla was observed being driven dangerously around the Yirrkala Community before it collided head-on with the Toyota Prado on Gunyipinya Road. The impact of the crash resulted in the deaths of all three occupants of the Corolla and one occupant of the Prado.

Injuries/Fatalities

Three people in the stolen Toyota Corolla and one person in the Toyota Prado died at the scene. Another person in the Prado sustained minor injuries. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.

Emergency Response

Emergency services, including police and paramedics, attended the scene.

Investigation

Northern Territory Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the theft of the Corolla and the dangerous driving leading up to the collision.

Road Closure

Gunyipinya Road was closed for an extended period of time following the crash to allow for investigation and clearance of the scene.
