Incident Overview
A fatal single-vehicle crash occurred at Glen Aplin, south of Stanthorpe, after an SUV took evasive action to avoid an oncoming vehicle allegedly travelling on the wrong side of the road. The SUV left the roadway, struck a culvert, rolled several times and hit a power pole, while the other vehicle did not stop.

  • Blue MG ZS SUV (travelling southbound on the New England Highway)
  • Light-coloured sedan (unknown make and model, allegedly travelling in the opposite direction on the incorrect side of the road; did not stop)

Injuries/Fatalities

  • Fatalities:
    • 92-year-old man from Wallangarra, passenger in the MG ZS SUV, declared deceased at the scene.
  • Injuries:
    • 85-year-old woman from Wallangarra, passenger in the MG ZS SUV, transported to Stanthorpe Hospital with life-threatening injuries and later airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital.
    • 20-year-old woman, driver of the MG ZS SUV, sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Emergency Response

  • Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit attended and is investigating the circumstances of the crash.
  • The injured passenger was taken to Stanthorpe Hospital before being airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital; the driver was transported to hospital as a precaution.
  • Road closure or traffic diversions were not stated.

Police Investigation
Investigations are focusing on identifying the second vehicle, described as a light-coloured sedan of unknown make and model, which allegedly travelled on the wrong side of the road and failed to stop.
