A person has passed away following a fatal two-vehicle traffic crash in Cape Cleveland this afternoon.

Initial investigations indicate around 1.30pm, two vehicles were travelling along Carty Road near Goodsell Road when they collided and caught fire.

An unknown person in one of the vehicles was declared deceased at the scene.

Two people travelling in the other vehicle, an 81-year-old man and 59-year-old woman, were transported to Townsville University Hospital in a critical condition.

Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances of the traffic crash.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has dash cam footage is asked to contact police.
