Incident Overview

A devastating four-vehicle collision occurred on the Bowen Bridge near Risdon, north of Hobart, on Friday afternoon, September 27, 2024. The crash resulted in the deaths of an elderly man and woman who were both in their 80s.

Details of the Crash

Around 3:40 PM, a silver Holden Barina, carrying the elderly couple, was traveling eastbound on the bridge when it was struck from behind by a truck. The force of the impact caused the Barina to collide with two other vehicles that were also traveling eastbound: a red Holden Commodore and a blue Honda HRV. Tragically, the elderly couple in the Barina died at the scene. Several other people involved in the crash sustained injuries.

Emergency Response and Investigation

The Bowen Bridge was closed in both directions following the crash. Police and emergency services remained at the scene to conduct their investigation. Tasmania Police are working to determine the circumstances that led to the crash, and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Conclusion

This tragic incident is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road safety. The community extends its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased couple.
