Incident Overview

Five teenagers were injured after a sedan left King George V Avenue and struck a tree at East Tamworth on Friday, 10 July 2026. NSW Police said its initial inquiries indicated the rear right passenger side of the vehicle hit the tree. The cause of the crash had not been determined and police inquiries were continuing.

People and Vehicles Involved

Police reported that three girls and two boys were travelling in the sedan. Police said a 17-year-old girl was the alleged driver, held a P1 licence and underwent mandatory testing. The available police statement does not identify the teenagers or give a final account of why the sedan left the road.

Injuries and Fatalities

A 17-year-old girl seated on the driver’s-side rear seat suffered critical head injuries, while a 17-year-old boy in the left-side rear seat was reported to have been thrown from the vehicle and suffered spinal injuries. Both were flown to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. Police said the alleged driver suffered head and facial injuries. A third 17-year-old girl was believed to have had relatively minor injuries, and another 17-year-old boy was assessed for leg and back injuries. The final three teenagers remained at Tamworth Base Hospital; police were told their injuries were not life-threatening. No death was reported.

Emergency Response

Emergency services were called to King George V Avenue at about 8.40 pm. Police did not release further detail about the attending ambulance, fire or rescue resources. The two passengers with the most serious reported injuries were flown to John Hunter Hospital.

Police Investigation

NSW Police established a crime scene, and specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit assisted local police. The public statement described the alleged driver and the initial information available to investigators; it did not make a finding about the cause of the crash or legal responsibility. Inquiries were continuing when the statement was issued.
