Incident Overview
A head-on collision between two vehicles on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during Wednesday morning peak hour caused hours of delays and reignited safety concerns over the bridge’s centre reversible lanes—commonly referred to by motorists as “death lanes.” The crash occurred at approximately 8:00 am on July 10, 2025, and was captured on dashcam. Two additional vehicles were clipped in the process. One motorist had to be freed from the wreckage using the jaws of life.

Traffic was heavily impacted in both directions, with the crash scene taking approximately two hours to clear.
Investigation
NSW Police are investigating the circumstances of the head-on crash. Focus areas include:
- Driver positioning in the reversible centre lanes of the bridge
- The lack of physical separation between oncoming traffic
- Review of dashcam footage, which captured the moment of impact
The incident adds to growing public concern regarding safety in the Harbour Bridge’s middle lanes, where vehicles travel in opposing directions with no fixed barrier.
Community Impact
The crash caused peak-hour gridlock and raised renewed scrutiny of the Harbour Bridge’s traffic configuration. Motorists have long referred to the middle lanes as “death lanes” due to the lack of a median or barrier between oncoming traffic. Calls for structural safety improvements are likely to increase following this incident.
