Incident Overview

NSW Police said an 81-year-old man died after the car he was driving struck a tree that had fallen across Lachlan Valley Way at Cowra early on Thursday, 2 July 2026. The police statement did not identify any other vehicle involved.

Location and Time

Emergency services were called to Lachlan Valley Way, Cowra, shortly before 3am. Police said the tree had fallen and was blocking the road. ABC News reported the road was closed shortly after the incident, based on Live Traffic history.

People and Vehicles Involved

Police described one car, driven by the 81-year-old man. He was the sole occupant. Police said it was believed he was from the ACT; no name was included in the initial release.

Injuries and Fatalities

The driver died at the scene, according to NSW Police. The initial police release did not report any other injuries or fatalities.

Emergency Response

Police and emergency services attended after the report. NSW Police said SES members were working nearby to clear the road after storm impacts when the crash occurred. The ABC reported that the SES had received 14 calls for assistance in the Cowra area during and after the storms.

Police Investigation

Officers attached to Chifley Police District were to prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.
