Incident Overview

A man died and a 12-year-old boy was injured after a white Mazda hatchback left Burwood Drive at Blackmans Bay on Monday, 29 June 2026. Tasmania Police said the one-car crash was under investigation.

Location and Time

Police said the crash occurred at about 8.50am on Burwood Drive in Blackmans Bay, south of Hobart. The available accounts identify the road location but do not specify the vehicle’s direction of travel before it left the road.

People and Vehicles Involved

Tasmania Police said a white Mazda hatchback was involved and that two people were in it: an adult male driver from the Kingston area and a 12-year-old boy. ABC News later reported that the boy was the driver’s son and had been seated in the rear of the car.

Injuries and Fatalities

Police said the man, aged in his late 40s, died at the scene. The boy sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Royal Hobart Hospital for treatment and observation. ABC News reported injuries to his arm and chest.

Emergency Response

The Mazda struck one power pole and then a second, police said. The impact brought down power lines, affecting nearby homes and creating an additional safety hazard. ABC News reported that about 1,500 customers initially lost electricity. Crash Scene investigators and Forensics officers attended during the morning to gather evidence.

Police Investigation

Tasmania Police said the cause remained under investigation and that a report would be prepared for the coroner. The public reports do not describe why the car left the road or provide a final finding about cause or legal responsibility.

Police asked witnesses, or anyone with dashcam footage of the Mazda or its manner of driving, to report information to police on 131 444 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
