Incident Overview
Queensland Police have charged a 36-year-old Warrami man following a fatal five-vehicle crash on the Smithfield Bypass on Wednesday, 5 August 2026. Police said a Toyota LandCruiser utility was allegedly stolen from Palm Cove before travelling south and colliding with a Toyota RAV4 and a Subaru Impreza travelling north.
The driver and sole occupant of the RAV4, a 25-year-old woman from Kewarra Beach, died at the scene. Four other people were taken to Cairns Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The available police reports do not make a final finding about the cause of the collision or legal responsibility.
Location and Time
- Crash Date: Wednesday, 5 August 2026. Police received reports at approximately 1:25 pm.
- Location: Smithfield Bypass, Smithfield, Queensland.
Vehicles Involved
- A Toyota LandCruiser utility, which police allege was taken from Williams Esplanade at Palm Cove at about 1:10 pm.
- A Toyota RAV4 and a Subaru Impreza travelling north when the collision was reported.
- After the crash, police allege the man entered a Toyota C-HR and forced its 71-year-old driver to drive from the scene.
Injuries/Fatalities
- Fatalities: The 25-year-old RAV4 driver and sole occupant died at the scene.
- Other Injuries: Four people were transported to Cairns Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The 71-year-old Toyota C-HR driver was not physically injured.
Emergency Response
Police attended after the 1:25 pm report. Around 2:15 pm, officers took the 36-year-old man into custody at Reservoir Road and transported him to Cairns Hospital for treatment. The Forensic Crash Unit and Cairns Criminal Investigation Branch are investigating.
Police Investigation
Police said the man was charged with one count each of:
- Stealing a vehicle.
- Dangerous operation of a vehicle.
- Being adversely affected by an intoxicating substance.
- Manslaughter.
- Failing to remain at an incident and render assistance, showing callous disregard for an injured person’s needs.
- Unlawfully entering a vehicle to commit an indictable offence.
Queensland Police said the man was refused police bail and was due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on 6 August 2026. The reports reviewed here do not state the outcome of that appearance. The charges are allegations, not findings of guilt.
