Incident Overview
Two teenagers have been charged and four others remain under police guard in hospital following a high-speed police pursuit that ended with a stolen hatchback crashing into a pole in Mascot, Sydney. The vehicle, allegedly driven by a 14-year-old boy, was first seen by police around 12:35 am on Erskineville Road before fleeing at speed. The pursuit ended when the car slammed into a pole on Botany Road. All six occupants were teenagers aged 14 and 15. Police later seized a balaclava, gloves, and mobile phones from the vehicle.

    • No fatalities reported.
  • Other Injuries:
    • The 14-year-old driver sustained stomach pain and was taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital in stable condition.
    • Five other teenage occupants were transported to hospital as a precaution but were reportedly uninjured.

Emergency Response
Emergency services responded rapidly following the crash. Photos from the scene show the front of the hatchback completely crushed and the windscreen shattered. All six teens fled but were apprehended nearby by police. A crime scene was established and the car was forensically examined.

Investigation
Police allege the vehicle had been stolen and was being driven by a 14-year-old at the time of the crash. Key investigative elements include:

  • The vehicle’s reported theft from Mascot sometime between Friday and Saturday
  • The sequence of the police pursuit and crash, including CCTV footage
  • The recovery of a balaclava, gloves, and mobile phones from the wrecked car

Two 14-year-old boys have been charged with being carried in a conveyance taken without the owner’s consent. They were granted conditional bail and are due to appear in a children’s court on August 4. The remaining four teenagers remain under police guard while inquiries continue.

Community Impact
The incident has raised serious concerns about youth involvement in vehicle thefts and high-risk driving. The crash caused substantial property damage and endangered lives in a residential area. Authorities have renewed calls for community awareness and responsible vehicle security.
