Pete Munyan, a 47-year-old factory worker, has been left with critical injuries following a severe accident at Bluescope Steel factory in Hastings, Victoria.

On July 1, while working the night shift, Munyan was struck by a 10-tonne steel beam that detached from a crane. The beam trapped him for two hours until specialist rescue teams could free him. He was then airlifted to Royal Melbourne Hospital where he remains in intensive care.

Munyan has sustained multiple severe injuries, including two spinal fractures and numerous breaks to his pelvis, leading to the amputation of his left foot. Despite the gravity of his condition, there is no brain injury or significant respiratory system impact. He has been mostly sedated, showing minimal consciousness but responsive to basic commands and physical cues.

Originally from Rochester, New York, Munyan moved to Australia in 2006 and resides in Dromana with his wife and two teenage children. Known for his robust health and athletic history, including carrying the Olympic torch in 1996, his resilience is well recognized by friends and family. A fundraiser to aid with his medical and recovery costs has raised over $34,000.
