Incident Overview

On Wednesday, 10 January 2026, work was suspended at the Kidston Pumped Hydro Project, a major renewable energy infrastructure site located approximately 285 kilometres west of Townsville in North Queensland, after a maggot-infested meal was discovered in a pre-packed crib meal supplied to a worker.

The incident prompted the immediate closure of the on-site camp facility and the evacuation of more than 100 workers from the site. Genex, the project operator, has suspended camp operations while improvement requirements are actioned by the camp contractor.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) is investigating the food safety incident and camp hygiene standards at the Kidston Pumped Hydro Project. Any workers, contractors or persons with information about food safety or hygiene concerns at the site are encouraged to contact WHSQ on 1300 362 128 or lodge a report via the online incident-reporting portal at www.worksafe.qld.gov.au.
