A 20-year-old construction worker has tragically lost his life following an accident at the John Hunter Hospital site in Newcastle. The incident occurred during the morning hours and involved the worker being struck by falling reinforcement.

The young worker was crushed by reinforcement material at around 9 am. Despite immediate treatment at the scene by New South Wales Ambulance paramedics and subsequent admission to the hospital, the worker succumbed to his injuries.
Operational Context
The hospital is currently undergoing a significant $835-million expansion project, managed by the global construction firm Multiplex, with over 180 workers on site. Following the accident, the site has been closed and secured, and an investigation by SafeWork NSW is underway.
Court’s Decision and Impact on Victims
While there is no court decision yet as the investigation is ongoing, the incident has prompted a response from various parties, including Health Infrastructure and building contractor Multiplex. Both organizations have extended their condolences to the victim’s family and co-workers and are offering support services, including counselling.
