Introduction
A mechanical fault aboard a BC Ferries vessel caused multiple cancellations on the Sunshine Coast route in British Columbia on April 7, 2026. The disruption affected scheduled sailings between Horseshoe Bay and Langdale.

Details of the Incident

Mechanical Issue:

  • The disruption was linked to a malfunction in the steering panel of the ferry Queen of Surrey.
  • The issue was identified early Sunday morning while the vessel was at dock.

Canceled Sailings:

  • The 7:30 a.m. sailing from Horseshoe Bay was delayed and subsequently cancelled.
  • The 8:40 a.m. departure from Langdale was also cancelled.
  • Additional cancellations included:
    • 9:50 a.m. from Horseshoe Bay
    • 11:00 a.m. from Langdale

Ongoing Disruption:

  • Further sailings throughout the day were identified as at risk while engineers assessed the vessel.
  • Midday departures, including those scheduled at 12:10 p.m., 1:15 p.m., 2:25 p.m., and 3:25 p.m., were flagged as potentially affected.

Operational Response:

  • BC Ferries issued service notices advising passengers of delays and cancellations.
  • To assist with transport continuity, water taxi services were arranged for foot passengers starting around 10:00 a.m.

Route Context:

  • The Horseshoe Bay–Langdale route connects the Lower Mainland with communities along the Sunshine Coast.
  • It is a key service for both vehicle and passenger travel in the region.

Current Status:

  • Engineers continued to assess the vessel to determine when normal service could resume.
