What happened

Greek authorities carried out a security search of the cruise ship Crown Iris at Syros after an anonymous report alleged that an explosive device had been attached to the vessel’s hull. No device was found, and the ship was cleared to continue its voyage to Israel.

Introduction

The Panama-flagged Crown Iris diverted to Syros during its voyage towards Haifa after the threat was received. The inspection temporarily interrupted the ship’s passage and left more than 1,500 people waiting on the island while the response was underway.

Security inspection at Syros

The Greek Coast Guard coordinated the search. A specialist diver examined the vessel and an explosives-detection dog was used during the inspection. The report did not identify the person who made the threat or describe any device beyond the allegation that one had been attached below the waterline.

Passengers and crew

Crown Iris was reported to have 940 passengers and 597 crew members on board. They were allowed to return to the ship after the search concluded and no explosive device was located.

Clearance to resume the voyage

Greek media reported that the vessel was cleared to resume its scheduled voyage to Israel. No injuries, damage to the ship or wider operational issue were reported in connection with the incident.

Information not yet confirmed

Authorities had not publicly identified a suspect, established a motive or confirmed whether the threat was connected to other warnings reported in Europe at the time. No group had claimed responsibility.
