Introduction
Carnival Cruise Line has temporarily removed Puerto Vallarta from portions of its Mexican Riviera cruise schedule following regional unrest in western Mexico. The adjustment was announced after heightened security alerts and travel advisories linked to violence that followed the death of a cartel leader in Jalisco State.

Details of the Itinerary Change

Canceled Port Call:

  • The cruise ship Carnival Panorama omitted its scheduled call at Puerto Vallarta on February 28, 2026.
  • Instead of docking, the vessel remained at sea or spent additional time at alternate destinations while the cruise line evaluated conditions ashore.

Reason for the Adjustment:

  • The decision followed violence associated with cartel activity in western Mexico after the death of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera.
  • The situation prompted a U.S. State Department Security Level 2 advisory recommending increased caution in parts of the region.
  • Although local shelter-in-place orders were later lifted, cruise lines adopted a precautionary approach to port calls in Jalisco State.

Operational Impact:

  • The suspension of Puerto Vallarta calls will continue for several weeks while Carnival monitors developments.
  • No specific date has been announced for the resumption of visits to the port.

Alternative Ports:

  • When possible, ships have substituted other Mexican Riviera destinations such as:
    • Cabo San Lucas
    • Mazatlán

Guest Communication:

  • Passengers booked on affected sailings were notified of the itinerary adjustments.
  • Pre-purchased shore excursions in Puerto Vallarta were automatically canceled and refunded or replaced with excursions at alternative ports.

Current Status:

  • Other Mexican Pacific and Caribbean ports remain operational for cruise calls.
  • Carnival Cruise Line continues to coordinate with local authorities and monitor the security situation before reinstating Puerto Vallarta in itineraries.
