A fatal collision occurred off the coast of Mumbai, India, on December 18th, 2024, between an Indian Navy speedboat undergoing engine trials and the passenger ferry Neel Kamal. The incident resulted in the tragic loss of 13 lives.
The collision occurred at approximately 4:00 p.m. when the naval craft lost control during trials. The impact caused significant damage to the ferry, leading to its sinking. Among the deceased were a naval officer, two representatives from the equipment manufacturer, and ten passengers from the ferry.
A large-scale rescue operation was launched, involving the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, marine police, and local fishermen. A total of 102 ferry passengers and 2 crew members from the navy boat were rescued.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, with video footage captured by passengers aiding in the inquiry. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed condolences and announced financial aid for the victims’ families.
