What happened
On Tuesday, January 2, 2024, Japan Airlines flight JL516, an Airbus A350-941 registered JA13XJ, collided with a Japan Coast Guard DHC-8 aircraft at Tokyo-Haneda Airport. The collision occurred at approximately 08:47 UTC as the A350 was landing on runway 34R, resulting in severe damage to both aircraft and a subsequent fire.
The A350, carrying 379 occupants on a scheduled service from Sapporo-New Chitose Airport, struck the Coast Guard aircraft during the landing phase. The impact caused substantial structural damage to both planes and ignited a fire on the runway. Five Coast Guard crew members were killed in the collision, while 15 passengers aboard the A350 sustained minor injuries.
