Police have charged a 35-year-old Joyner man following a fatal traffic crash at Chermside this morning, March 21.

It will be alleged at approximately 5.15am, a man was using a pedestrian crossing zone at Kittyhawk Drive and Murphy Road when he was struck by a gold Honda CR-V.

It will be further alleged the driver, a 35-year-old Joyner man, left the scene before abandoning his vehicle along Awaba Street at Wavell Heights and setting it on fire.

The vehicle was not stolen.

The pedestrian, a 72-year-old Chermside man, received life-threatening injuries and was transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.

Crime scenes were declared at both locations.

Following extensive investigations, detectives from Carseldine’s Criminal Investigation Branch located the driver at a property in Geebung at approximately 10am today, March 21.

He was taken into police custody and has been charged with one count each of dangerous driving causing death and leaving the scene of incident without obtaining help, as well as arson of a motor vehicle.

He is due to appear at Brisbane Magistrates Court tomorrow, March 22.

Police are appealing to witnesses, or anyone with relevant vision, to come forward.

Investigations are ongoing.
