Introduction
A crew member was airlifted from the Saga Cruises ship Spirit of Adventure after falling ill while the vessel was sailing off the northern coast of Spain on April 1, 2026.
What Happened
The ship was approximately 63 miles (100 kilometres) from Estaca de Bares when the shipboard medical officer determined that the crew member required urgent treatment ashore. The precise nature of the medical emergency and the crew member’s nationality were not released.
Response and Investigation
Spanish Maritime Rescue coordinated the evacuation and directed Spirit of Adventure to alter course toward La Coruña. A Helimer 402 rescue helicopter intercepted the ship shortly before midnight and airlifted the crew member to Alvedro Airport near La Coruña. The patient was then taken by ambulance to the University Hospital Complex of A Coruña for further medical evaluation and treatment.
