Introduction
On April 5, 2024, the Ambience cruise ship experienced an allision with the cargo vessel Grey Fox during docking maneuvers at Cape Town Harbor, South Africa. Despite challenging gale-force winds, the incident resulted in only minor damages to both vessels.
Details of the Incident
While attempting to dock, Ambience came into contact with Grey Fox, already moored at Berth B. The allision, assisted but not prevented by two tugboats and a harbor pilot, led to minor hull damages on both ships. Fortunately, there was no water ingress or pollution, and the cruise ship safely berthed at the terminal shortly after.
Operational Context
The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) confirmed the incident and initiated an investigation to understand the circumstances and prevent future occurrences. Despite the allision, port operations remained unaffected, and Ambience was cleared to disembark passengers and continue its schedule, highlighting effective crisis management and operational resilience.
