Rescue Operation Odyssey of the Seas: Dramatic Sea Rescue in the Ionian Sea - 6 August 2024

In the early hours of 6 August 2024, the cruise ship Odyssey of the Seas, operated by Royal Caribbean, responded to a distress signal while navigating from Civitavecchia (Rome) to Santorini in the Ionian Sea. The vessel altered course and successfully rescued 77 migrants from an overloaded sailboat approximately 112 nautical miles southwest of Pylos, Greece. All rescued individuals were provided immediate medical care, food, and water before being transferred to Kalamata, Greece.

The rescue operation demonstrated coordinated seamanship and humanitarian response. The planned stop at Santorini was cancelled to prioritize the safety and welfare of the rescued individuals, with the ship proceeding directly to its next scheduled port in Kusadasi.

Upon receiving the distress signal from a Malta-flagged cargo ship reporting a nearby sailboat in dire straits, Odyssey of the Seas immediately altered course to assist. The crew deployed both a tender boat and a smaller rescue boat to the scene. The tender successfully towed the sailboat closer to the cruise ship, enabling safe transfer of all 77 migrants onboard. The rescued individuals were stabilized and cared for during the operation and subsequent transit to Kalamata.
