A devastating ferry accident in the Democratic Republic of Congo has claimed the lives of at least 38 people, with over 100 still missing. The overloaded ferry capsized in the Burisa River late on December 20th, 2024.

The ferry, carrying merchants traveling home for Christmas, was reportedly overloaded with more than 400 passengers. Despite government warnings against overloading, the practice persists due to limited and expensive transportation options in the region.

This tragedy follows another recent boat accident in Congo’s Fimi River, where 25 people died just four days earlier. Overcrowding and inadequate safety measures are persistent problems in Congo’s waterways, leading to recurring accidents with high casualty numbers.
