Introduction
French maritime authorities are investigating damage to a protected Second World War aircraft wreck after the cruise yacht Orient Express Corinthian reportedly anchored above it near Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer on July 16, 2026.
What Happened
After divers inspected the wreck the following day, they reported extensive damage. The wreck, lying about 38 metres below the surface, had its fuselage and wings broken apart. Authorities determined that the vessel’s anchor caused the damage. The anchorage was generally authorised for vessels of that type.
Response and Investigation
France’s Department of Underwater Archaeological Research reported the matter to judicial authorities. A temporary ban on diving and anchoring in the area was imposed while the circumstances are investigated. No passenger or crew injuries or deaths were reported.
