Introduction

Three passengers aboard the Sun Princess required urgent medical evacuation while the ship was stranded off Florida’s coast due to the imminent threat of Hurricane Milton.

Details of the Incident

On October 9, 2024, as Hurricane Milton approached, the Sun Princess found itself unable to dock at its scheduled port of call, Fort Lauderdale, due to the port’s closure. The ship, finishing a 16-day transatlantic journey from the UK, was forced to remain approximately 5 miles offshore.

Response and Rescue Efforts

The first medical evacuation involved a male passenger needing advanced medical care, necessitating an airlift by a helicopter from USCG Air Station Miami. Later that day, two additional passengers were evacuated by a rescue boat due to separate health issues. These operations ensured the safety and well-being of the passengers amid challenging conditions brought on by Hurricane Milton.
