Introduction

A fourth gastrointestinal illness outbreak of the 2026 season was reported aboard National Geographic Sea Bird after its July 15–20 Southeast Alaska voyage, with 13 people reported ill.

What Happened

The reported cases involved 8 of the 83 passengers and 5 crew members. The outbreak followed another illness event on the preceding July 10–15 voyage, when 18 passengers and one crew member were reported ill. The cause of the illnesses was not identified.

Response and Investigation

The vessel implemented enhanced cleaning and disinfection, isolated ill persons, and consulted the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Vessel Sanitation Program. No deaths were reported.
