Introduction
Tragedy struck Indonesia’s busy Ketapang–Gilimanuk ferry route late on July 2, 2025, when the KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya sank approximately thirty minutes after departure. The disaster claimed at least six lives, with dozens more still unaccounted for. Survivors cited a sudden list and suspected engine-room leak as the cause. The incident unfolded in rough seas, prompting a large-scale but interrupted rescue effort.
Details of the Sinking
What Happened:
- The ferry departed Ketapang Port in East Java heading toward Gilimanuk in Bali before experiencing severe listing and ultimately sinking in the Bali Strait.
- Onboard were 53 passengers, 12 crew, and 22 vehicles, according to the ferry manifest.
- Survivors report that water rushed in from below deck, giving passengers little time to react before the vessel submerged within minutes.
Rescue Efforts:
- 31 people have been rescued by helicopters, fishing boats, and nearby local vessels—many of them unconscious due to rough sea conditions and exhaustion.
- Rescue operations were paused overnight due to darkness, strong currents, and waves reaching 2.5 metres, and resumed at first light on July 3.
- More than 100 personnel, including Indonesian Navy, police, SAR teams, and local volunteers, are involved in the ongoing search.
Victims and Survivors:
- At least 6 confirmed fatalities have been reported, though the number may rise as search operations continue.
- The manifest lists 65 onboard, but authorities suspect potential discrepancies—an issue commonly encountered in domestic Indonesian maritime operations.
- Survivors were rushed to nearby hospitals in Gilimanuk and Jembrana; several remain in critical but stable condition.
Government and Public Reaction:
- President Prabowo Subianto, speaking from Saudi Arabia, ordered an emergency response to the tragedy, calling for heightened coordination among rescue forces.
- The incident has reignited public concern over Indonesia’s ferry safety standards, particularly on high-volume routes connecting the archipelago’s islands.
