Introduction

On February 27, 2024, a serious incident aboard the Silversea cruise ship Silver Nova necessitated the emergency medical evacuation of a crew member who sustained severe injuries during elevator maintenance. The Brazilian Coast Guard was called in for a critical airlift to provide the necessary medical attention.

Details of the Incident

The medical emergency unfolded when a crew member, identified as either a deckhand or an engineer, was injured while working in an elevator shaft. The captain of Silver Nova promptly informed the passengers of the situation via the ship’s loudspeaker system and altered the vessel’s course to facilitate the evacuation. An urgent call for O-type blood donations among the crew was made to support the injured individual’s immediate needs.

Operational Context

Following the accident, Silver Nova made its way to the nearest port to ensure the crew member could be evacuated efficiently. Approximately an hour and a half post-incident, the ship’s medical team requested blood donations, and later, the successful airlift by the Brazilian Coast Guard was executed from Deck 11. This operation occurred during a 30-day cruise from Rio de Janeiro to Fort Lauderdale, underscoring the critical importance of emergency preparedness and response at sea.
